Chinese Herbs

History of Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbs have served as the foundation for "Traditional Chinese Medicine" for over 3,000 years, and the resulting system is now used to treat many complaints. Knowledge of the healing power of Chinese herbs and herbal remedies has been passed down from generation to generation, and today represents one of China’s greatest gifts to mankind. The isolation of China throughout history played a role in the general lack of understanding about Chinese herbs by other world civilizations. Since the opening of China in 1972, the knowledge of the ancient healing powers of Chinese herbs, however, has been gradually spreading to western countries. Chinese herbs are now experiencing a rapid increase in usage and popularity. Health-conscious consumers are concerned about the concentration of synthetic chemicals in western diets, medicines, and the general environment. Chinese herbs are being welcomed by progressive western consumers who are seeking natural, healthy and balanced alternative remedies. In more recent years it has become increasingly popular in the US and worldwide as a comparable alternative to Western medicine.

What are Chinese Herbs and Herbal Formula?

There are thousands of herbs in the Chinese materia medica. These herbs are primarily of plant origin, and may include roots, bark, seeds, flowers and leaves. About 300 herbs are commonly used. Each herb typically has unique characteristics (i.e. yin/yang balancing, qi/energy boosting, etc.). These individual herbs are mixed to form an herbal formula to produce desired therapeutic effects. These Chinese herbal formulas often include several to over twenty different herbs that work in harmony to produce the desired effects in a person’s body.

Effectiveness of Chinese Herbal Medicine

The effects of Chinese herbal medicine are vast and can help to manage many health concerns and individuals of any age, race, and gender can benefit from herbal medicine. Many Chinese herbal formulas have been highly researched and showed effectiveness in scientific studies. Not to mention that these formulas and herbs have been traditionally used in Asia for decades to great effect and are currently prescribed as pharmaceuticals in parts of Asia and used in hospital settings.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Chinese herbs are extremely effective and normally have only mild side effects. But, patients should see a licensed Chinese herbal practitioner to receive a full consultation for maximum benefit from Chinese herbal medicine.

How Does It Work?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is very different from the western scientific approach we are accustomed to. The fundamental idea of living in harmony with nature and the environment forms the basis for the use of Chinese herbs as well as the traditional Chinese approach to health. Chinese medical experts promote a healthful balance of yin and yang – two forces present in all of nature. When yin or yang forces or qi/energy levels are off-balance in the body and spirit, health problems arise. Chinese herbs and herbal remedies are used to help realign an individual’s yin or yang balance in order to improve overall well-being.

Treatment Area

Treatment areas of Chinese herbal formula are almost same with those of acupuncture. Acupuncture and Chinese Chinese herbs are often used together for added therapeutic effect.
